Two new rules have been finalized by the current federal administration that provide protections for those in nursing homes and those receiving home care. In particular, facilities funded by Medicare and Medicaid, will have set minimum staffing requirements and home healthcare companies will be accountable for how Medicaid funding is spent with the requirement that 80% be spent on worker salaries rather than administrative overhead.
Other news includes the Office for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announcing a final rule strengthening HIPAA medical privacy regarding reproductive health and the Labor Department announcing salaried workers who make below the $59K threshold be fairly compensated for overtime.
